Using the toilet is an important life skill for independent living, boosting self-confidence, enhancing the quality of life, and integrating into educational and social environments. Children with Autism have unique challenges that can make potty training all the more daunting for parents and caregivers
Toilet Training
When general toilet training strategies have not been successful, or if your child is not meeting developmental milestones or has an ASD diagnosis, additional barriers may be preventing successful toilet training. Traditional approaches may not always work for children with unique needs—that’s where Jigsaw’s toilet training programmes come in.
Our BCBA uses evidence-based, data-driven strategies tailored to your child’s specific needs and skills. Through a personalised approach, we identify the most effective techniques to support your child in learning to use the toilet comfortably and independently.
Many children with ASD and other challenges learn to use the toilet later than their peers. Possible reasons include:
Whatever the reason, our team is here to help your child overcome these challenges and become comfortable using the toilet— within five days.
1. Initial Assessment & Interview
We begin with a comprehensive assessment to understand your child’s unique needs and identify the barriers to successful toilet training. This includes:
A strategy meeting (1 hour) is held one week after the assessment to share findings, discuss the proposed plan, and outline materials needed.
2. Customised Toilet Training Plan
Based on the assessment, we design a personalised training programme tailored to your child’s needs. We use collected data to identify patterns—such as when accidents are most likely to occur—and create a toileting schedule that supports skill development and routine-building.
3. Hands-On Training & Parent Involvement
The first session includes a workshop where our consultant and behaviour technicians implement the strategies. From there, the behaviour technician will work 1:1 with your child, while a parent or caregiver is required to be present to observe and learn the methods for continued success.
In conjunction with our full-day or half-day sessions, the toilet training programme focuses on developing essential skills, including:
With our tailored approach and ongoing family support, we aim to make toilet training a positive and successful experience for both you and your child
