We will focus on a naturalistic approach by using research-based principles of the science of behaviour that focus on intrinsically motivating items and materials. Reinforcement is embedded into the task. Teaching occurs in the setting directly related to the skill. We look for “teachable moments” when the child displays interest and excitement about a particular person, item, or object.
We understand and value the role family plays in the lives of young children affected by autism. Parents and caregivers are the constant and most important supporters of children, therefore parental involvement in therapy is highly encouraged and supported. Sessions are designed in a way that can be implemented and sustained in the home/school, the child’s natural setting.
We provide compassionate PBS by putting continuous emphasis on client and family input. Goals, strategies, and outcome measures are determined in consultation with the individuals who will be affected by the intervention. We understand the struggles families face and are flexible to meeting the changing needs of families we serve. We will do all we can to support children and families in all setting and situations where our services are needed.
We see PBS as a collaborative effort between our clinical staff, the family, child’s healthcare providers, and educators. Partnering with parents, we will create an environment that will promote meaningful learning opportunities and experiences in various settings. By consulting and collaborating with other providers, we will create an effective program that will meet the unique needs of the child and family.
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a values driven framework for supporting individuals who experience behaviours of concern. PBS uses the science of behaviour and a strict set of values (E.g. quality of life and human rights).
PBS is beneficial to any individual, family or staff team who need evidence based and compassionate support with behaviours of concern. PBS can be delivered in the home, nursery/school, care home and/or community services. PBS can be used alongside traditional schooling or can be run as a temporary therapeutic program for children who’s school placement has broken down. It is appropriate for children and adults. Jigsaw's staff are most skilled in working with individuals aged between 2-25 years.
One of our qualified Behaviour Analysts will first carry out a questionnaire, then if necessary run a Functional Behaviour Assessment to determine the function (reason) for the behaviour and formulate a Positive Behaviour Support Plan. They will then work with your family or staff team to give training in understanding behaviour and the individual’s personalised Positive Behaviour Support Plan.
